Hazelwood College Senior Camogie Munster Champions 2017

On a cold bright Saturday morning, Hazelwood College Senior Camogie side engaged in a tough and exciting encounter with Scariff Community College. Hazelwood started well and an early goal by Laura Stack and a point by Sinead O’Donnell gave the Limerick side a dream start against the Clare opposition. Throughout the first half, play was tight and frantic with both sides giving it their all. Scores were exchanged but Hazelwood’s lucky early break was the real difference between the sides at the half time whistle with a score line of 1.4 to 3 points.

Scariff started the second half with vigour with a goal from their first attack and they continued to dominate for the next 15 minutes. Despite their upper hand Scariff failed to convert their opportunities due to the resilience of the Hazelwood backs. The teams were level at 1-4 each as the game entered the final quarter. Unrattled by the Scariff onslaught, Hazelwood’s character shone through as they outscored their opponents 3 points to 1 in the remaining period. As Scariff fought hard to try conjure a late attack, they were met with a solid Hazelwood outfit who were now playing full of fire and belief.

When the final whistle was finally blown it was greeted to the delight of Hazelwood team and supporters. Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher were crowned Munster Senior Camogie Champions for 2016/17 on a score line of 1-7 to 1-5.

Hazelwood Heroines Golden Victory

Recently, the Senior Hazelwood College Camogie team placed against Scariff in the Senior Camogie Munster Colleges’ Final at home in their local pitch.

There was a biting cold wind in the air that both camogie players and spectators alike could feel as they stamped their feet to regain some warmth from standing still for so long. However it was evident that once the match started, this did not affect Hazelwood Colleges playing chances at all.

Laura Stack scored the first goal against Scariff within ten minutes of the match and many of the girls on the team followed her lead enthusiastically so that by the end of the first half Hazelwood College was drawing with Scariff 1-3. At the start of the second half the girls came back so strong and determined scoring 4 more points, securing them a win in the Munster Camogie Final 1-7 to 1-5. It was a tight match but a well deserved win as the winning team crowded into the pitch to celebrate their victory and hard work.

The Senior Girls Camogie All Ireland ‘B’ Semi Final will take place tomorrow 3rd February @ 12.30 in St. Patricks GAA, Limerick.

The girls will be playing against the Senior Girls from Colaiste Iosagain, Stillorglin, Co. Dublin

Our Lady’s Secondary School, Templemore: 0-1

Only one thing comes to mind to describe the recent performance of the Hazelwood College Senior Camogie team in the Munster Camogie Championship League. Magnificent.

On a bleak Tuesday morning the ladies of Hazelwood College set out for Tipperary in their upcoming match against Templemore. Upon arriving at the destination, they were greeted with a biting wind and a blanket of grey clouds looming in the sky overhead. The ladies however, endured the cold with a steely determination and did not let it distract them from what they were their to do, which was win.

Victory was predicted to be in the hands of Hazelwood College within the first five minutes of the match when Aoife Murray scored the first of what would be many goals for the team. This goal was the catalyst that Hazelwood College needed in order to give them the courage to work harder and push the boundaries, if possible, even more. The results were satisfactory as within the next fifteen minutes of the game, Ide Cunningham scored not one, but four points for the team and secured them the upper hand in the match.

And so the first half came and went. The girls of Hazelwood college were tired and both the team and spectators alike wondered if they would perform just as well in the second half of the game or would Templemore make a comeback. Our wondering was laid to rest as Hazelwood College played just as well, if not better, with Chloe O Brian scoring the team a goal that was followed by Sarah MacDermott who finished with burying a goal in the bottom left corner of Templemores’ net. The whistle blew and Hazelwood had won 4-13 to 0-1

Milford Camogie Visit

Senior Camogie Munster Semi-Final Replay

Recently the Hazelwood College Senior Camogie team took to the pitch against Secondary School Clonakilty at Castle Road Camogie Grounds, Cork.

Hazelwood started with determination and three minutes into the first half Aisling Cunningham scored the opening point for Hazelwood. Sacred Heart quickly recovered with a long range point. Clonakilty took advantage of the bad puck out of Hazelwood and easily tapped it over the bar. Hazelwood conceded a free from a Hazelwood 65, when Tara Fitzgibbon hit into Laura Stack’s who quickly tapped over the crossbar in the seventh minute of the game. Clonakilty took a quick puck out which was caught by Laura Stack who took her second point in the game. Aisling Cunningham got a goal from the rebound of Laura Stack in the tenth minute of the first half. After a bad puck out from the Cork side, Chloe O’ Brien regained possession, which she passed off to Aoife McMahon to get her first point of the game. Hazelwood kept on scoring, thanks to the accuracy of Chloe O’Brien, Íde Cunningham and Elanna Mulchay. Clonakilty scored another point from a 65 just before the half time whistle, which left the score at Hazelwood 1-8 to Clonakilty 0-3.

In the second half, Hazelwood started the half off with heart and determination wanting to win. They quickly took off, getting scores off their main scorers, Laura Stack, Bríd Flanagan and Chloe O’Brien. Clonakilty conceded a goal coming from their skilled half forward. Hazelwood fought on, as Katie Carroll got a cracker of a goal during half way through the second half. Clonakilty quickly fought back to get their second goal. There was no looking back for Hazelwood as they secured four more points from Íde Cunningham, Bríd Flanagan, Elanna Mulchay and Katie Carroll.

The score finished Hazelwood College 2-17, to Sacred Heart, Clonakilty 2-3. This was enough to secure Hazelwood their place playing in the Munster Senior Camogie Final.

Historic Win for Hazelwood College

Recently, the Hazelwood College senior girls capped the perfect year when they secured the perfect double after winning the Limerick A Camogie Championship along with their Senior Cork Camogie Championship title earlier in the year. Hazelwood College are the only school to hold both a Limerick and Cork title in the same year in camogie.

The referee on the day was Seanie Hartnett and weather conditions were ever changing. Hazelwood started in bright sunshine and ended in a flurry of hailstones. People involved with Laurel Hill and Hazelwood camogie teams and understand the rivalry between them knew it was going to be a tough battle from the throw in and it was hard to predict who would come out on top.

The match began at a hectic pace Hazelwood securing position and eventually leading to Cliona O’ Callaghan throwing the first point over the bar. However, from the get go it was clear that Laurel Hills side was going to put up a fight.

There was a great performance from Cliona O’ Callaghan in our forward line who scored a total of 1-3 in the first half and 1-5 in the second half. Our captain Aine Cunningham also scored 1-1 in the second half and along with Donna Mulcahy’s point in the second half it brought the final score to 3-11 to Laurel Hills 2-6.

Hazelwood’s back line defended ferociously throughout, led by Tara Fitzgibbon and Rosin Twohill, who cleared every ball that came their way. Chloe O’ Brien’s impeccable delivery made the forwards’ job a lot easier, constantly running up and down the side delivering every ball she could into the forward line.

Mr. Tom Halpin was a very proud manager with two County A Championships delivered.
