Hazelwood College make it five in a row over archrivals Desmond College

Hazelwood College : 2-11
Desmond College: 1-5

This final was played in the back pitch in Newcastle West and was evenly contested up to half-time. However in the second half fitness and skill proved decisive for Hazelwood as they ran out easy winners to retain their title once again.

Hazelwood were slow to settle and Desmond gathered up steam to lead after five minutes but a goal from Clodagh Reidy brought the Drom girls back into this final and by half time they had a good five point lead. Points from Lizzy Costello (4), Joanne O Gorman (2)Naomi Noonan (1) and captain Susie Costello (1) and an inspirational goal from Clodagh Reidy brought their tally to 1-9. Jennifer Stokes playing very well at half back made some forward runs and brought the Drom Girls to life during this first period. At half-time the score was Drom 1-9 to Desmond 1-4.

Even though scores were scarce in the second period, Hazelwood were well on top of their game. Some fine performances from Jen Stokes, Sinead Kiely, Susie Costello, Siobhan Lehane, Mary Hartnett and Clodagh REidy kept Newcastle under pressure for most of the half. A fine goal from Mary Hartnett followed by points from Clodagh and Susie put the game beyond Desmond and Hazelwood Colleged finished up 2-11 to 1-5 for Desmond College.

Hazelwood College First Year Hurlers Retain County Title.

On Wednesday last Hazelwood Colleges first year hurlers took on Croom in Dromcollogher in a bid to retain the County VEC Title. Captained by Jamie Coughlan the team fought hard to put their stamp on the game and ran out deserved winners with a score of 0:7 to 0:4 at the full time whistle. The team returned the ‘John Cregan Perpetual trophy’ to the college for the second year running.

Hazelwood got off to difficult start with Paudie Lane pulling a hamstring during the warm-up and being withdrawn from the game. From the whistle both teams fought hard to pull ahead. Great defensive work from Hazelwood, and in particular Stephan Kiely and Tadgh O Flynn kept the Croom forwards at bay and the teams were level at half time. In the second half Hazelwood were quick to settle and eventually began to pull away from the Croom side to take the match. All players had a good game but best on the day for Hazelwood were Stephan Kiely, Tadgh O Flynn, Padraig Cunningham and Padraig Nolan. Man of the match was captain Jamie Coughlan who was outstanding throughout. Points were scored by Ian Carroll (0:1), Timmy O Carroll(0:1), Bryan Hannigan(0:1), Jamie Coughlan (0:3) Peter Irwin (0:1) and Padraig Nolan (0:2).The team will now go on to try and retain the Munster Title taken by the college last year.

Hazelwood make it three in a row in a thriller

Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher: 4-4

St. Josephs Convent, Doon: 3-5

In a thrilling encounter which was nailbiting to the final whistle, Hazelwood College overcame archrivals Doon to do the double, Junior and Senior, again this year. It was the third title in a row for our Junior girls who are now putting down a marker for other schools in the county for a Senior ‘Three in a Row’ next year. Sheer grit and determination for Hazelwood won out on the day over a confident Doon outfit who were also favourites on the day.

From the throw-in Hazelwood were quick to settle and Clodagh Reidy pointed from 20 meters after five minutes following great work from Joanne O Gorman in the middle of the pitch.Captain, Lizzie Costello then had a point from a free but after ten minutes Doon struck with a goal- this only served to wake the girls up. Three minutes later they were back on track with a goal from Joanne O Gorman and a further point from Clodagh. It was all Hazelwood for the remainder of the half and a goal from Michelle Buckley and a well taken point from Lizzie Costello left the half time score Hazelwood College2-4 to Doon 1-0.

Playing with the breeze in the second half Doon were awarded two frees from sustained pressure and pointed both, before they came storming up to snatch a great goal giving Sinead Kiely no chance in the Hazelwood goals. Weathering the storm, Lizzy Costello took a great pass from Joanne O Gorman to solo forty meters up the right touchline before crossing a high ball for Siobhan Enright to fist into the back of the Doon net. Doon came back at Hazelwood and were awarded another free and were then fortunate to score another goal following a rare slip up in the Hazelwood Defense.

Hazelwood came storming back and forced the Doon goalkeeper into makeing some fine saves. Following some great runs by center-back Jennifer Stokes Hazelwood kept the pressure on and were eventually awarded a penalty by referee Pat Molyneaux. Clodagh Reidy took responsibility for the spot kick and converted it from a beautiful strike to put Hazelwood four points clear. Doon had the consolation of two more points from frees but Hazelwood were finishing the stronger side and were unlucky not to increase their winning margin when the final whistle blew. The final score was Hazelwood College 4-4 to Doon 3-5.

Best for Hazelwood on the day when a great performance was put in by all were Joanne O Gorman, Clodagh Reidy, Jennifer Stokes, Marie Galvin, Lizzy Costello, Patricia Kirwan, Bernie Stokes and Siobhan Enright. Captain, Lizzy Costello accepted the trophy from Tim Woulfe, congratualted Doon on a good sporting game, the management of Neville Park, Rathkeale and teachers Louise Beamish and Tom Halpin from Hazelwood College. We now go on to play Mitchelstown College in the Munster Semi Final.
