This week saw Hazelwood Colleges sports teams at the top of their game as they took to the field in Football, Hurling and Camogie. The Junior Camogie team got their season off to a winning start beating Templemore on a scoreline of 1-2 to 0-2. Hazelwood College, led by captain Joanne O Gorman, were runners-up in last years Munster Championship and were determined to build on last years success. The girls battled a tough opposition and difficult weather conditions to earn a well deserved victory.

Next up was the Junior Ladies Football team who took on Abbeyfeale in a bid to retain last years title. Hazelwood College enjoyed a great win with a score of 6-10 to 4-10. Top scorers on the day were Clodagh Reidy and Joanne O Gorman. A number of first year players had joined the team for the first time and settled well in to the side.

The Boys U14 football team were in action against Askeaton and won 1-8 to 2-3. The defense and goal keeper Conor Buckley worked hard to keep Askeatons score to 0-2 in the first half. In the second half Darren Coleman, Padraig Cunningham and James Barrett put in great performances and allowed Hazelwood to pull ahead and record a good victory.

The final matches of the week saw both First Year Hurling teams meet two teams from Ard Scoil Ris in Limerick. Hazelwood A were unlucky to be beaten by just one point despite great performances from Michael Nolan, Sean Watson, Barry Bresnihan and Kieth Lacey. Hazelwood B had a substantial victory over Ard Scoil Ris B. The final score of 5-3 to 1-2 reflected Hazelwoods dominance from early in the game helped by some exceptional performances by Kevin Noonan, Gary Hanley and Patrick Finn. This was a great week for sport at Hazelwood College, well done to all involved.

Desmond College, NCW : 2-2

Hazelwood College Dromcollogher scored a comprehensive win over Desmond College Newcastlewest to reach the schools Senior Football Final. The team, coached this year by local PE Teaching student Patrick Donnelly never looked to be in any difficulty. Chris Morrissey, Joseph Cotter and Ger O Gorman were always in command to make up a solid Dromcollogher Defence. Inter County player Michael Boyce assisted by teammates Derry Mc Carthy and Kevin McGill put over some fine points for Hazelwood College. Desmond College only managed to get the ball to their full forward line on a few occasions and even then found that the in form Damien Stokes was impossible to beat. Hazelwood College First Year Hurling Teams continue Winning Streak

Following the large number of first years enrolled in the school there are now two first year hurling teams competing in this years competition. Both teams have got their campaigns off to a winning start with wins over Charleville CBS, Desmond College NCW and Croom.

The first match this week saw Hazelwood College A line out against Desmond College Newcastlewest. Hazelwood College came out deserved winners on an impressive scoreline of 9-17 to Desmonds 1-1. Desmond College got off to the better start and scored a goal within a few minutes of the start. However Hazelwood were quick to settle following this early set back. Kevin Coughlan opened the scoring for the Dromcollogher side, this was followed up with four great points and then a cracking goal from Ciaran Collins. Hazelwood continued to cause problems for the Desmond defense and by the half time whistle the score was Hazelwood 6-6 to Desmonds 1-1.

The second half was more of the same with Hazelwood driving home some great scores and Desmond struggling to keep the opposition at bay. Desmond College failed to score in the second half.
The final score was Hazelwood College 9-17 to Desmond Colleges 1-1.

Scores for Hazelwood were by, John O Gorman, Ciaran Mossissey, Darren Mulcahy, Kieth Lacey, Ciaran Collins, Michael Lenihan, Kevin Coughlan and Gearoid Sexton.

The following day saw Hazelwood B line out against Croom in desperate conditions with strong wind and heavy rain making things difficult for both sides. Croom started well but were unable to make any ground following some great clearances from Gary Hanley and Ryan Brennan. Eventually Croom managed a point from play. Hazelwood answered this with a goal and a point of their own. The half time score was Hazelwood 1-1 to Crooms 0-3. The second half saw a determined Hazelwood side put their mark on the game. The introduction of Patrick Finn made a great difference and he dominated centre-field for the remainder of the game. Hazelwood began to find their strength and pull away Croom side with some great scores.
The final score was Hazelwood 5-5 to Croom 1-3

On Thursday last the first year hurlers from Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher met near neighbours Charleville CBS in the first round of the Championship. Charleville proved no match for the determined Hazelwood side who were eager to repeat last years Munster Final success.

Hazelwood made their mark early and opened the scoring with a good point and seemed not to be put off by the difficulty of playing into the wind in tough conditions. Charleville fought back with a goal. Hazelwoods Michael Nolan quickly put a stop to the Charleville advance and scored a great goal to put Hazelwood back into the driving seat. At the half- time whistle Hazelwood were up 1:3 to 1 goal.

The second half opened with Charleville scoring a point before Hazelwood set their minds to the task at hand. Kieth Lacey added to the Hazelwood scoresheet with two points from well taken frees and a further point from play. By the mid-point of the second half the Dromcollogher side were in command of the game. Further scores from Kevin Coughlan, Keith Lacey, Michael Nolan, Barry Breslin and John Barrett sealed the victory. Charleville had no answer for the skill and professionalism of the Dromcollogher side. The final score was Hazelwood 4-16 , Charleville CBS 1-1.

Hazelwood College- Munster Hurling Champions for 2nd Year Running

On Wednesday last a determined Hazelwood College first year Hurling team set out to meet Clonakilty in the final of the Munster Championship in Millstreet. This was the third year in a row that the school made it to the final and the boys were hoping to make it two victories in a row and to get revenge for the 2003 final where they were defeated by Clonakilty. It was a hard fought match to the final whistle with neither side willing to give up without a fight.
Clonakilty settled quicker into the game and dominated most of the play in the first half. Hazelwood were feeling the loss of Patrick O Regan who had broken his hand in the previous match. But while Clonakilty tried hard they had a lot of wides and Hazelwood were lucky only to be down by two points at half time.
Some changes were made in the second half with Tadgh O Flynn being brought out to centre field and Stephan Kiely was moved to full back. This made a great difference and strong defending brought Hazelwood back into the game. They dominated play for the first ten minutes of the second half. It took Clonakility some time to recover but they regained their lead with a goal. At this stage captain Jamie Coughlan was moved to Corner Forward and he quickly put two goals into the back of the Clonakilty net. Jamies 2nd goal was sheer class as he rounded two players and scored a goal from 30 yards out. In the last three minutes Hazelwood turned up the heat on the Clonakilty side and pushed them out of contention. After a tough match between two determined sides Hazelwood were once again crowned the Munster Champions on a scoreline of 3-9 to 2-5.There were great scenes as Jamie Coughlan from Newtownshandrum accepted the cup on behalf of his team.
Best for Hazelwood College were Tadgh O Flynn, Padraig Nolan, Peter Irwin and Jamie Coughlan who was also man of the match.

Munster handball Champions at Hazelwood College

Pictured are Hazelwood College Handballers Pat Quaid, CJ Fitzpatrick and Padraig O Shea following their success in the Munster Handball Competition. Pat was the winner of the U18 competition, CJ was the winner of the U16 competition and Padraig and CJ were the winners of the doubles competition. The will now go on to play Connaught in the All Ireland semi-final which will take place in Ennis.

VEC Colleges County Final- Hazelwood College record yet another victory

The U16 VEC Colleges County Final was contested between Hazelwood College Dromcollogher and Colaiste na Trocaire of Rathkeale recently. The match took place in Mick Neville Park in very wet and slippery conditions. It took both teams some time to settle into the game but once Hazelwood settled they were in full control to the final whistle. Despite being a hard and physical game it was joy to watch as the skills of hurling were well displayed from both sides. The man of the match was Jack Fitzgibbon who showed tremendous leadership throughout the game and scored some great points. At the end of the game Hazelwood were victorious on a decisive scoreline of 4-15 to 1-5.

Hazelwood College first year hurlers continued their winning ways this week with a crushing defeat over Nenagh in Rathkeale. Captained by Jamie Coughlan the boys dominated throughout the game leaving the opposition with little chance of adding to their scores. Early in the game Nenagh made a few attempts at staying in contention but the powerful Drom side broke away and Nenagh failed to score in the second half.Best for Hazelwood were Peter Irwin (2-8), Peter Kirwin ( 2-9) Jamie Coughlan (1-4) Tadgh O Flynn ( 0-1) Michael Brosnan (1-1) Patrick O Regan and Padraig Nolan. The team will now go on to meet Cahir in the Munster Semi-Final next week. The final score was Hazelwood 7-21 to Nenagh 1-2.
