Hazelwood College Senior Hurlers reach Munster Final

Hazelwood College Senior Hurlers reach Munster Final

Hazelwood College : 0-14
Nenagh Vocational : 0-13

It was a close run contest, but Hazelwood College triumphed over Nenagh in Mick Neville Park to reach the Senior ‘B’ Munster Vocational Schools hurling final. Nenagh, the favourites who had narrowly lost the Junior All-Ireland Final two years ago, looked dangerous from the outset scoring a point within seconds of the throw-in from Heffernan, their All-Ireland medal winning Tipp minor. However this was only a prelude to a spell of Hazelwood dominance. After ten minutes the score read 4 points to 1 in favour of Hazelwood who had scored twice through the unerring free-taker Jamie Coughlan and once each from Benji Sheehy and Pa Molyneaux. As Nenagh settled into the game both teams exchanged point for point.Jamie Coughlan again scored twice from frees and Jimmy O Sullivan chipped in from mid-field on the twenty-first minute to put Hazelwood ahead 0-7 to 0-4. This was however our last score in the first half and Nenagh, aided by a wind, put up four unanswered points giving them a one point advantage at the half time whistle.

The second-half was a close run affair and followed a similar pattern to the first with Hazelwood dominating the early exchanges only for Nenagh to rally back. Jamie Coughlan was again on song scoring three more points from placed balls. Ger O Gorman scored the point of the game from well inside his own half, two more points from Benji Sheehy and one from Pat Quaid left us 14 points to 11 up with only five minutes to play. True to the quality of their players and their ‘Never say die’ attitude Nenagh rallied back to leave just one point in it. The relief of the final whistle was just reward for the whos effort and skill from no 1 to 22 cuold not be faulted. Henry O Gorman was outstanding in goal as were the full back line who kept out what had been a goal scoring machine in the previous rounds. The work-rate of the half back line was immense and our forwards lethal given the chance. Hopefully we can carry this form through into the final to be played in Mallow at 12 O Clock on Wednesday January 31st against Clonakilty- The Cork Champions. We would like to take this chance to thank all those involved in the West Limerick U 18 Panel who provided us with a tough challenge the previous weekend. Though they ran out winners on the day this tough challenge was just what we needed.

Hazelwood College : 4-13
Abbeyfeale: 2-11

Hazelwood College recently met Abbeyfeale in a hard fought Munster B Hurling Final. This match was exceptional both in the standard of Hurling from both sides and in its intensity. The first 10 minutes was end-to-end stuff with both sides exchanging some fine points. Abbeyfeale looked to have some control until Hazelwood burst back with two goals from Pat Quaid before half time. The mid way score was 2-4 to 1-5 in favour of the Dromcollogher side. Hazelwood College dominated in the second half but failed to make this pressure count and with only ten minutes to go had a narrow two point lead. At this point Hazelwood took control with some excellent goals first from Jamie Coughlan, then from Aidan Butler who hit a purple patch scoring 1-4 in the last ten minutes. It was an excellent performance both in terms of skill and effort with 100% given by all players in this fiercely competitive match.

Hazelwood take Munster School Blitz by Storm!!!!!

Hazelwood take Munster School Blitz by Storm!!!!!

Two teams from Hazelwood travelled to Drumtarriff , Co. Cork on Wednesday 18th September to compete in the annual Hayes Blitz which involves teams from around the province. Despite the miserable, harsh weather conditions, which made the challenge all the more difficult, both teams were successful.

The senior team were the first to begin the day’s events and fought hard in every match to emerge as group winners. In both of their group matches they faced stiff competition but were clear winners, all the more surprising given the fact the teams has only trained together since September. This promises to be a extremely successful year, based on these early victories.

The Junior girls were on fire and no team could stop the amazing forwards. This is all the more amazing, considering the majority of the team were first years, only in the school a matter of weeks. In both their group matches they proved themselves to be the far stronger opposition, and have gained a reputation of being formidable opponents.

In the Junior final the team encountered their most difficult challenge of the day, a strong and well fancied Waterford team. In a thrilling first half, Hazelwood fought tooth and nail to maintain their slim lead of a solitary point, in a contest that at half time was still all to play for. In the second half the team dug deep and were able to fend off the challenge and to extend their lead.

In conclusion it was a noteworthy day, as both teams excelled against tough opposition, even though it was their first competitive fixture, and this surely promises a glorious year for camogie for Hazelwood in the year to come. A special thanks to Mr Donnelly and John Noonan who tavelled with Ms Herbert and the teams for all their support and encouragement.

Senior Team: Sinead Kiely, Joanne O’ Gorman, Mary O’ Gorman, Mairead Geary, Emma Browne, Marie Galvin, Laura Coleman, Sarah Curtain.

Hazelwood College 3-8
Colaiste na Trocaire 3-8

Hazelwood College will have to face Rathkeale again in the 1st year Football County VEC Final for the 2005/06 season. The boys from Dromcollogher are lucky to be still in with a chance of the County and Munster double after being outplayed for long periods of the game.

Rathkeale began brightly scoring the opening point followed by further points from frees pushing them into a 4-1 point lead after 10 minutes. However, Kevin Noonan from Hazelwood shot an excellent point to add to Hazelwoods account. Rathkeale were still winning possession around mid-field and kept the Hazelwood backs under pressure. Rathkeale notched up two goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half to lead 2-4 to 0-3 at the break.

Hazelwood showed more urgency at the start of the second half and got themselves back into contention with a goal from Keith Lacey. Rathkeale responded with a goal and restored their 7point advantage. Luckily for Hazelwood this goal was the catalyst for players such as John Barrett and Michael Nolan to stand up and be counted.
