Hazelwood College Cross Country Athletes brave conditions to deliver top class performances.

In early December, on one of the worst days of the year, the school athletics team competed in the Limerick Schools Cross Country Competition. First off the mark was Deirdre Cunningham who came in 3rd out of a field of forty. The boys U14 team consisted of Micheal O Flynn, Conor Dillon, James Kelly and Christopher Lane. The team showed great nerve and determination which paid off with Micheal and Conor coming in 1st and 3rd and with James and Christopher holding on to 5th & 6th place to bring back a team gold. Next up was John O Gorman in the Junior Race and despite carrying a knee injury he battled hard to finish just outside the medals in 4th place. Despite the incessant rain and wind the competition continued and Tara Hurley took her place in the Inter Girls which was run in conjunction with the Senior Girls. Tara beat all expectations and finished 2nd in the event. Finally, Edmund Kiely, Brian Hannigan and Darren Coleman took their place at the start line for the U17 event. All three runners came in together in 2nd, 3rd and 4th place. Despite the horrific weather conditions the team came home in high spirits.

Three in a Row for Hazelwood College

Three in a Row for Hazelwood College

The Senior Hurlers from Hazelwood College had their 3rd victory over teams from Tipperary when they defeated a fancied Killenaule team in Galbally. A brace of goals from Hazelwood with 5 minutes to go saw them emerge winners from this tightly contested affair. Both teams made the best of conditions that were not the best for Hurling. The first half was a tit-for-tat affair with neither side managing to establish a stranglehold. Despite only playing in patches Hazelwoods forwards were sharp in the first half making the most of their chances. Jamie Coughlan and Peter Irwin scored 2 points a piece. Padraig Nolan was having an outstanding game scoring 1-1 until a head wound saw him leave the field. He was then replaced by blood sub Shane Fitzgibbon until the second half. Patrick Molyneaux and Darren Lane chipped in a couple of points between them to ensure that 5 of our 6 starting forwards had scored by half time. The half time score read Hazelwood 1-7 to Killenaule 2-5. A fair reflection given that the backs were under severe pressure.

The second half was a much tighter affair with our excellent half back line of Shane Hehir, Brian Geary and Henry O Gorman clamping down on their pacey forwards limiting them to 3 points. We were guilty of shooting wide particularly from far out when we would have been better serving quality balls to our full forward line who were doing damage. Jamie Coughlan and Patrick Molyneaux both pointing before we took over coming to the end, with goals from Tim Fleming, Darren Lane and Jamie Coughlan to seal a 7 point win.

Hazelwood College : 8 – 6

SMI. NCW: 2 -3

The first round of the Munster Intermediate Camogie Championship took place on Thursday last in Dromcollogher. A win was a must for Hazelwood to stay in the competition and the Dromcollogher girls did not disappointed. They hurled as if their lives depended on it. SMI were left shell shocked from the throw in. After ten minutes Hazelwood were 7 points up. From Marie Galvin in goals to Niamh cagney at number 15 they all showed great heart and determination. Nicola Browne, Aideen O Flynn and Annette Lordan were the full back line and were outstanding in keeping the fast ‘pacey’ forwards of SMI scoreless for the first 20 minutes. Niamh O Brien, Sinead Kiely and Emma Browne were bursting out of their centre back line at every opportunity.Siobhan Enright and CIara Meaney defended and attacked wherever they were needed. The forwards were majestic. Almost every ball they touched was a score. The warm humid day did not stop Maire Flanagan, Cliona Mullane and Jamie O Leary showing their skill at every opportunity.
