Hazelwood College Capture Cork Camogie Title

On Wednesday last Hazelwood competed in the Cork Colleges first year blitz in Inniscarra for the first time. The girls got off to an excellent start beating Carrigaline (6-0 to 0-0). Next up were Colaiste Choilm, Ballincollig, Hazelwood recorded another victory (5-3 to 0-0). The full back line of Aine O Sullivan, Caroline Watson and Gemma Barrett were supreme and were in “thou shall not score” mood throughout the day. Our final game of the group was versus St Marys Mallow. This was an extremely tough game as Mallow had strong players all over the field. The inside forward line of Katie Coughlan, Kara Clifford and Emer Cunnigham utilised every ball. The scoreline of 3-2 to 1-1 does not reflect the intensity that both sides played with throughout the entire game. This was a heart stopping game and were it not for the hard working midfield of Grainne Sheehy, Katie O Sullivan and Orla Cunnigham a victory wouldn’t have been recorded. Our goal keeper Amy Ryan had an unbelievable day between the posts only allowing one goal to be scored in 5 games despite the tough opposition. Having won all our games we then played the semi final against Coachford. At this stage Hazelwood were unstoppable and had their sights firmly fixed on a place in the final. The entire team had the game of their lives. Having beaten Coachford (5-1 to 0-0) we waited to see our opponents. Kinsale emerged as the other finalists. Kinsale were tough opposition, having won this title last year. Kinsale got off to a great start scoring a point within the opening ten seconds. Goalkeeper Amy Ryan responded with a long puck picking out her club mate, Katie Coughlan. Katie made no mistake placing the sliotar in the back of the net. This gave Hazelwood the confidence they needed and began their scoring spree. Grainne Sheehy having found her scoring touch in the semi final contributed 1-2 in the final. Katie O Sullivan was Kinsales worst nightmare scoring 2-0. Kara Clifford and Emer Cunnigham hassled the backs and goal keeper and did not allow any ball to be cleared without huge pressure. Orla Cunnigham worked extremely hard throughout the entire game and gave huge relief to the backs whenever she was needed. Caroline Watson (0-2) despite playing in the full back position emerged from the back line looking for scores and was successful on several occasions. Hazelwood College surfaced deservedly as winners in a scoreline of 6-3 to 0-3.

Team: Amy Ryan (Newtown), Gemma Barrett (Kileedy), Caroline Watson (Milford), Aine O Sullivan (Newtown), Katie O Sullivan (Ballyagran), Grainne Sheehy (Milford), Orla Cunnigham (Kileedy), Katie Coughlan (Newtown) Captain, Kara Clifford (Newtown), Emer Cunnigham (Kileedy), Niamh Cunnigham (Kileedy).

Hazelwood College: 4-15
Cahir :1-5

Hazelwood won the first round of the Munster Vocational Championship by a convincing 19 points. It was no easy victory on a wet day in Galbally where every ball was hard fought for. Peter Irwin opened the scoring with a fine point from half forward. Cahir quickly levelled before Hazelwood scored four on the trot. Peter Irwin again, Jamie Coughlan from a free, Henry O’Gorman who was outstanding throughout at mid-field and Darren Lane the other wing forward also getting in on the act. The next five minutes were all Cahir, scoring 1-3 without reply. Hazelwood were at this stage under some pressure falling behind for the first time in the match. It was also to be the last time as the final ten minutes of the first half were all Hazelwood. First Jamie Coughlan pointed from a free and then Patrick O’Regan put one over from mid-field. The scores were now level at 7points to 1-4. Hazelwood went in 9 points up at half time due to a brace of goals from Seamus Sheehan, both rockets to the back of the net, Jamie Coughlan knocked over another two and Micheal Brosnan popped over another one after burning his man on the wing.

The second half started off where the first finished with Jamie Coughlan scoring two points, one from play and the other from a free. Patrick O’Regan then scored two brilliant points, both almost carbon copies of eachother soloing through from mid-field before firing over the bar from 45 yards out. Cahir scored their first and only point of the second half before Seamus Sheehan buried the ball into the back of their net, doubling on it first time as it came across the goals. Michael Brosnan scored another point before Jamie Coughlan finished the scoring with a tremendous finish after beating two players.

Hazelwood College : 2-6
Presentation Tralee: 0-4

Playing away from home in Tralee Hazelwood College got off to a lightning start with the first ball pointed by Niamh Curtin at the five minute mark. The play was fast and physical and Hazelwood met the back of the net at 18 minutes with a goal from Nicola O’Connell. Tralee retaliated with a point but Hazelwood fought back scoring another goal. Hazelwood were on a well fought roll scoring the next 3 points, going at full steam until the final whistle sounded

After a number of substitutions in the first half the girls were ready for the next half. Sinead Keane was now on for Niamh Curtin, Martina Curtin for Ashling O’connor and Norma Kiely for Sarah Forde

In the second half the battle was on and scoring was light until Grainne Shannon on for Becky Ryan at full forward scored a great point. Tralee were gaining for a short time in this half but Hazelwood piled on the pressure with Sarah Moloney at mid-field taking her point. The girls put up a wonderful battle and Niamh Mc Carthy made a great start when she came on for Sarah Moloney. Chris Harnett then came on for Loretta Hanly who had played a blinder at midfield. Hazelwood goalie Letitia Noonan made a number of wonderful saves and did her position proud. Presentation Tralee put up a good game but determination and team play proved fruitfull for the Hazelwood girls with an end score of 2 goals and 6 points to Hazelwood and four points to Presentation.

Hazelwood College Camogie team got off to an exceptional start last Friday in the Munster Intermediate Championship beating a tough Cahir side. The opening ten minutes saw attack after attack on the Cahir defence and resulted in a lead of 2-2. The mid field pairing of Niamh Cagney and Tara Hurley were majestic! All fifteen players hurled extremely well throughout the entire 60 minutes. All forwards took each of the scoring opportunities given. Máire Flanagan being the thorn in the Cahir defence scoring 3 goals in fifteen minutes. Joanne Murray, Niamh O Brien were in “thou shall not pass” form and chased every ball until it was cleared. The full back line allowed our goal keeper a reasonably quiet day, giving huge relief with their long clearances. This was a great opening game of Camogie for Hazelwood College. We wish them the best of luck in the next round against Roscrea.
