Hazelwood Hurlers Reach Munster Final

Hazelwood Hurlers Reach Munster Final

The semi final was a tough encounter with Carrick on Suir scoring a point within the first minute.  Hazelwood quickly responded with a free and began their scoring spree.  Hazelwood dominated the remainder of the first half with every player playing to their full potential.

Patrick O Regan opened the scoring in the second half with a point from play. Carrick On Suir scored their 4th point of the day from a free in the 32nd minute. A quick puck-out to Seamus Sheehen resulted in the ball in the back of the net after Jamie Coughlan connecting supremely with the sliotar.  Soon after “big” Jamie Coughlan scored his 2nd point of the day, along with Jerry Lane adding another score to his tally. Carrick On Suir getting another score from a free.  Another Hazelwood goal resulted from a placed ball.  At this stage the game was over and Hazelwood cruised to victory.  Great performances were seen at all corners of the field.  The Munster final is due to be played after Christmas against the winners of Kanturk and Clonakility.

Hazelwood Reach First All-Ireland Final

Hazelwood Reach first All-Ireland Final

Hazelwood College advanced to the final of the U19 C All Ireland Schools Basketball Cup on Wednesday the 7th of January with a well deserved victory over a gallant Presentation Terenure side.

Hazelwood started slowly and were punished by some good outside shooting from Terenure.   After a quick timeout, a reorganised Hazelwood defence closed Terenure down more effectively.   Baskets from Vickie Harnett, Miriam Noonan, Emma Purcell and Celia Cremin kept Hazelwood in touch at the end of the first quarter.

Hazelwood’s defence grew meaner in the second quarter, restricting Terenure to four points.   Ciara Meaney, Aoife Leahy and Maire Flanagan were impressive in defence forcing a lot of turnover ball while Emma Purcell tirelessly crashed the boards.   Unfortunately for the Dromcollogher outfit, the deft touches normally so typical of their offensive play were missing.   The half finished with the sides tied on fourteen points.

The third quarter brought more of the same.   Terenure couldn’t break down the Hazelwood defence while Hazelwood struggled to put the ball in the net at the other end.   Suzanne Sheehy substituted for Miriam Noonan who took a well earned rest.   An excellent basket from Aoife Leahy, who played her best game all session, saw Hazelwood finish the quarter trailing Terenure by four points.

Hazelwood applied an aggressive full court press at the beginning of the fourth quarter.   Terenure struggled to come to terms with the new defensive tactic and lost possession easily.   Three fast baskets by an on-fire Ciara Meaney put Hazelwood into the driving seat.   Hazelwood continued to pepper the Terenure net as the fans grew louder.   Baskets from Maire Flanagan, Aoife Leahy and Emma Purcell put Hazelwood fourteen points to the good.   Jennifer Roche, introduced to strengthen the defence, was brought on with Maria Korpesiova and Niamh Greaney.   Maria finished the Dromcollogher scoring when she rebounded a fast breakaway layup from Niamh Greaney.

The supporters vociferously counted down to the buzzer before invading the court.    With moist eyes and brimming smiles the players lined up for the presentation of bronze medals to the students from Terenure.   This was followed by the presentation of the MVP award to Emma Purcell.  Next stop Tallaght.

Hazelwood College                4-12

Killenaule                                1-3

Hazelwood College beat Killenaule in Lattin last Thursday in the Munster Senior hurling Vocational Quarter. In the last 5 minutes as Henry o’Gorman, Micheal Brosnan and the two Jamie Coughlans (little and large) each chipped over a point it may have looked easy for Hazelwood but the game was in fact a hard fought, tense affair especially for the first 40 minutes. Jamie Coughlan opened the scoring for Hazelwood with a free in the third minute but Killenaule quickly replied through their Tipp minor full forward scoring 1-1 in a two minute burst. Henry o’Gorman pulled Hazelwood back level scoring an excellent goal after bursting through on a solo-run from midfield. Killenaule chipped over another point to retake the lead but Jamie coughlan quickly pointed another free to level matters again. The next ten minutes was the hardest fought period of the game with neither side scoring but Hazelwood College were slowly beginning to dominate the middle third of the field while the full back line had got to grips on their direct opponents. With 5 minutes left in the half Jamie Coughlan pointed a 65 to put Hazelwood into a lead that they would not relinquish. Seamus Sheehan rocketed the ball to the back of the net shortly afterwards to leave the score at half-time 2-3 to 1-2, in favour of Hazelwood who were playing with the wind. In the second half however, Hazelwood with a higher work-rate totally dominated despite the breeze. Jamie Coughlan Scored 2-1, Peter Irwin scored twice, Henry o’Gorman and “big” Jamie Coughlan, who had been introduced as a sub, each scored a point before Killenaule scored their solitary point of the second half. Hazelwood once again took over to finish the match strongly. Next up for the senior hurlers is the Semi-final v Carrick-on-Suir , where hopefully we can follow up on our quarter final win

Hazelwood College’s U19 Basketball team advance to All Ireland Semi- Final

Hazelwood College’s U19 Basketball team advance to All Ireland Semi- Final

Hazelwood College’s U-19 girls basketball team advanced to the semi-finals of the Irish Schools’ Cup after a thrilling one point victory over an excellent Stella Maris side in Tramore on Monday.

Stella Maris dominated the initial exchanges with some strong driving by their inter-county star Aisling Hennebry. The Tramore side raced into an early six point lead as Hazelwood struggled to come to terms with the blistering attack. Hazelwood called a timeout, rearranged their defence and succeeded in stemming the strong Tramore tide. Baskets by MVP Emma Purcell and Maire Flanagan narrowed the gap to two points by the end of the quarter.

Hazelwood settled quickly in the second quarter but were not able to bridge the two point margin. Significantly though for the Dromcollogher side, five different players scored in this quarter underlining the strength in dept of the team. Celia Cremin scored from the free throw line while both Miriam Noonan and Vickie Harnett hit the net twice. A superb breakaway layup from Ciara Meaney and solid defensive play by Aoife Leahy had the team feeling confident as the half time buzzer sounded.

Strong contributions by both Jennifer Roche and Maria Korpesiova in the third quarter allowed Hazelwood to take the lead for the first time in the match. Emma Purcell, in devastating form under the basket, left carnage in her wake. Excellent distribution of the ball by Vickie Harnett and outstanding defence by Celia Cremin, Miriam Noonan and Jennifer Roche kept the Tramore side under control. Three baskets in a row from Maire Flanagan followed by another from Ciara Meaney saw Hazelwood finish the quarter with a three point advantage.

Stella Maris came out fighting in the final quarter, throwing everything including the proverbial kitchen sink at the Dromcollogher outfit. Hazelwood dug deep with Aoife Leahy to the fore in repelling the Tramore onslaught. Excellent shooting by Tramore from the free throw line narrowed the margin to just one point but Hazelwood were not to be denied. Congratulations to all the players and subs that never gave up and were still running hard when the final buzzer sounded.

CJ Fitzpatrick – All Ireland Colleges Handball Champion

CJ Fitzpatrick – All Ireland Colleges Handball Champion

Thurles Handball club was the place to be last Saturday morning, November 8th as it hosted one of the most exciting All Ireland Colleges Finals for many years. Hazelwoods CJ Fitzpatrick, having received a walkover in the semi, found himself in the 60 X 30 court facing his opponent Stephan Cooney of Colaiste Naíthí, Ballaghadireen, Co. Roscommon.

CJ got off to a great start in the first game scoring the first 4 points without reply. However, this scoreline was evened up at five points a piece. In the final minutes CJ was looking at a scoreline of 13 to 20 in favour of Cooney. CJ would have to focus himself for the second game having lost 21-16. Eddie Prunty an aspiring handballer himself reassured us that CJ would take the second game once he settled. This he did in dramatic style winning out on a scoreline of 21-11.

It was all to play for in the tie-breaker with two very determined competitors heading back into court to do battle. Not surprising CJ settled quickly and notched up the first ten scores in style. He looked solid throughout the game and although Cooney managed to claw back some well deserved points, the hard working CJ showed great skill to win out on a margin of seven points taking the Senior Colleges Gold medal. Well done CJ on a fine performance.
