1st year North Munster league
St. Clement’s College 1
Hazelwood College 2
Hazelwood College maintained their 100% league record with a hard-fought victory in Annacotty on Thursday. The away team dominated the early exchanges despite playing against a strong breeze. Mikey O’Connor was busy in the first quarter and his clearances from the ground were very impressive. Once Colin Burke and Olly Stokes began to dominate midfield, opportunities to open the scoring were bound to come. Hazelwood had a few half chances before scoring in the ninth minute. Following some excellent work by Charlie O’Mahony on the left wing, Olly Stokes produced a powerful drive the keeper could only deflect. Darragh O’Sullivan showed his attacking instincts to react quickest and side footed the ball to the corner of the net. The central defensive duo of Adam Curtin and Patrick O’Donnell had to be at their best to keep Clement’s attack at bay for the remainder of the half. Noah Finn and Matthew Lynch were doing well in midfield, creating further chances just before half time.
Charlie O’Brien was introduced at half time and was well suited to this physical battle. On the left, Bobby Gore was leading by example winning some key tackles. Hazelwood continued to produce good goal chances especially from a series of well taken corners. Eventually Hazelwood doubled their tally and it was well worth the wait. A ball bounced around the square, was half cleared and fell to the left foot of Charlie O’Mahony. With excellent technique he hooked the ball over his shoulder over the heads of the advancing keeper and defense. The home team upped their performance for the remainder of the game, scoring a consolation goal with few minutes remaining.
