J.P. McManus Scholarships Awards

Students in County Limerick have been awarded third level scholarships as part of a new €30 million scheme sponsored by JP McManus, at an awards ceremony last Saturday in the University Concert Hall.  Declan Mills from Castletroy College and Sarah Curtin from Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher, were among the 118 recipients from all over Ireland.  The scheme will provide financial assistance to many top performing students who completed their Leaving Certificate in 2008 and students were presented with certificates by the Minister for Education & Science, Batt O’Keeffe

Mr.McManus has contributed €30 million to fund the provision of these scholarships each year and it is estimated that over 1,300 students from the 32 counties will benefit from the scheme over its duration.

Scholarships are awarded to the top performing students in each county who attend any recognised non fee-paying post-primary school and is subject to a means test. A minimum of two scholarships are offered in each county.

Mr McManus said that he “would like to congratulate the 2008 winners for their tremendous hard work and achievement”.

CSPE Trip Report

On Monday the 27th of February last, a C.S.P.E class from Hazelwood College ventured into Limerick City for an educational experience in the Limerick Circuit Court. The class had an early start to reach the court at around 10 o’clock. It was a great experience at the courts for everyone. We were all able to see how the Law works in our country. We were present for two cases and we personally felt sorry for the criminals in these courts as the judge was quite heavy on the sentences. However the Barristers really impressed us with their persuasive skills. We would urge anyone to just drop in and view a court case, although a ring in advance to the reception in the circuit court would be advisable. We really enjoyed our day and we learned so much. We would like to thank the Circuit Court for having us and Mrs Garrihy our class teacher.

The law in our lives

The law in our lives

On Wednesday 28th February 3rd year pupils from Hazelwood College were provided with the opportunity to emerse themselves in the legal system in Limerick City. With the assistance of the court clerk Ken Butler a thoroughly enjoyable and thought provoking experience was provided.
They gained first hand information on the workings of the court and the different sentences handed down. Several real life cases dealing with offences such as possession of a dangerous weapon, assault, possession /sale of drugs, theft and behaving in a drunk and disorderly manner were witnessed. Seated in the public gallery all listened and watched attentively to the mechanics and procedures of the court proceedings. Key people such as judges, barristers, solicitors, prison officers, court clerks, journalists and the stenographer were all present and accounted for.
Pupils were greatly impressed by the impartiality and common sense shown by the judge. The experience allowed the pupils to see how the laws of the country are enforced through the courts and that failure to obey will lead to some form of penalty or punishment as evidenced. Short hearings were arranged for future dates so the court finished up early and the judge spoke very kindly to the pupils stating that he hoped to see a few of them back in wigs in later years. Here’s hoping… !

CSPE Oireachtas Visit

CSPE Oireachtas Visit

A second year group of CSPE students in Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher were treated to a special visit from the Oireachtas Education Officer Ms Raftery who carried out an exciting workshop based on Irish Democracy and the work of the Oireachtas. The students learned much about voting and how important it is for every eligible citizen to have his say at election time. One Student remarked “ I cannot understand why any person with a vote, would not go to cast that vote. After all that one vote could make a huge difference”.

Local TD John Cregan gave a short presentation and took questions from the students afterwards. The Oireachas Education Officer was most impressed with the warm welcome bestowed from the school and wished all the students well for the future.

BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2009

Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher was delighted to have five projects taking part in the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2009. Twelve students travelled from the train station in Charleville to Dublin Heuston on Tuesday, 6th January 2009 with science teacher, Ms. O’ Connor. Excitement and anticipation was high among the students for what was to come during their week at the RDS. The students also got a superb opportunity to make new friends from all over the country and to see what project ideas other people were working on. The judges were very pleasant and the experience of presenting their projects to the judges was a wonderful opportunity to show case their work and efforts. In the evenings the students were treated with a trip to Funderland, the cinema in Dundrum Town Centre and a disco at the RDS. The group returned back to Charleville station with Ms. O’ Connor and Ms. Herbert at eight thirty on Saturday, 10th January 2009, with awards, memories, and fun had by all!!!
Paudie Walsh’s project, ‘BELT UP! – A novel device to check for the wearing of seatbelts at various distances’, received a Highly Commended award at the Young Scientist Exhibition. Everyone at Hazelwood College is very proud of his success.
A Display Award was awarded to the project completed by Transition year students, Lewis Hodgson, Suzie Boyle and Michelle Browne. Their project entered in the Biological and Ecological category aimed ‘To investigate the various effects of pollution on fresh water Salmon and Trout’.
Transition Year students, Niamh O’ Brien and Elizabeth Morley carried out ‘An Investigation into the Affect of Tyrosine Rich Foods on our Dreaming Patterns’. The girls discovered that such foods as raisins, eggs, cheese and soy products can cause increased frequency in the number of dreams experienced by participants.
Transition Year students, Aisling O’ Brien, Michelle Lane and Heather Coffey carried out ‘An investigation into the minority numbers taking Science subjects at Leaving Certificate’. With ever increasing interest in the development of ‘knowledge economies’ and home grown scientific experts, this project investigated a topical educational issue, the results of which may have a long-term impact in the success of Ireland as a centre for scientific excellence.
First year students, Bridann Cronin, Clare Fehin and Shane O’ Callaghan carried out ‘A Qualitative Study on the use of Natural Horsemanship and Traditional Training Practices’. The students carried out extensive research into the training practices used by horse trainers in the mid-west region. The focus for horse trainers was on good horsemanship rather than defining if the practices being used can be classified as natural or traditional training practices.
The students are thankful to their science teachers Ms. O’ Connor, Ms. Herbert, Mr. McCarthy and Mrs. Treacy, who offered guidance and support during the preparations for the exhibition.

Fantastic ‘5’ Hazelwood Projects qualify for BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2009

Hazelwood College is delighted to have five projects taking part in the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2009, which will take place in the RDS, Dublin January 6th -10th 2009. The projects being undertaken by the students at Hazelwood are varied in the categories for which they have qualified, from the Biological and Ecological, Social and Behavioural Sciences to the Technology category of the competition. The students partaking are from both junior and senior cycles at Hazelwood College which is a testament to the interest shown in science, across the student population here at Hazelwood College. Three first year students, Bridann Cronin, Clare Fehin and Shane O’ Callaghan are carrying out ‘A Qualitative Study on the use of Natural Horsemanship and Traditional Training Practices’. In this project the students are investigating practices used in horse training.

Niamh O’ Brien and Elizabeth Morley, two Transition Year students are busy with their project, ‘An Investigation into the Affect of Tyrosine Rich Foods on our Dreaming Patterns’. With the help of willing volunteers here at Hazelwood College, the girls project does exactly what is says on the tin!!

Transition Year students Aisling O’ Brien, Michelle Lane and Heather Coffey are carrying out ‘An investigation into the minority numbers taking Science subjects at Leaving Certificate’. With ever increasing interest in the development of ‘knowledge economies’ and home grown scientific experts, this project investigates a topical educational issue, the results of which may have a long-term impact in the success of Ireland as a centre for scientific excellence.

A most topical project is being undertaken by Transition Year student Paudie Walsh. Paudie’s project, ‘BELT UP!- A novel device to check for the wearing of seatbelts at various distances’, may prove of great interest to varies interested parties such as The Road Safety Authority and An Garda Siochana.

A project competing in the Biological and Ecological category aims ‘To investigate the various effects of pollution on fresh water Salmon and Trout’. This project is being completed by Transition year students, Louis Hodgson, Suzie Boyle and Michelle Browne. In light of this summer’s unseasonal weather events and our ever increasing concern about pollution in all its forms, this project aims to shed some light on pollution in fresh water fish.

All of the students are very excited about representing their school in such a prestigious competition. The students are being getting guidance with their work by their science teachers Ms. Herbert, Mr. McCarthy and Ms. O’ Connor. Ms. Treacy is busy organising fund-raising events to help provide assistance for the trip to Dublin in January, 2009. Best of luck to all involved, we are very proud of their efforts here in Hazelwood College.
