Hazelwood College Hurlers take first steps in Munster with impressive win over Kinsale

Hazelwood College : 5-12
Kinsale : 0-10

On Thursday last Hazelwood College Dromcollogher began their Munster Championship campaign with an impressive win over Kinsale in Buttevant. Hazelwood took control of the game early on when Jamie Coughlan scored a great goal in the opening seconds. Jimmy O Sullivan was quick to add to the Hazelwood scoresheet with an impressive display at full forward and a personal tally of 3-2. Shane Hehir and Aidan Butler both had good games and played a crucial role in the game.
Kinsale found it difficult to get back into the game thanks to a solid defense from the Hazelwood College backs in particular John Ryan, Timmy Flemming and Patrick O Regan combined with some fine saves from John Nix.
The impressive Hazelwood College outfit were far too strong for the Kinsale side. The final score was Hazelwood 5-12 to Kinsales 0-10. Hazelwood will now go on to meet Clonakilty in the next stage of the competition.

Hazelwood College First Year Hurlers defeat Askeaton in hard fought game.

Hazelwood College First Year Hurlers defeat Askeaton in hard fought game.

Hazelwood College : 1-5
Askeaton :0-3

Earlier this week in perfect conditions Hazelwood Colleges first year B Hurlers took on Askeaton in Dromcollogher. Askeaton put Hazelwood under pressure from early in the game but a solid defence from Hazelwood College kept Askeaton scoreless. Gary Hanly and Paddy Herlihy were particularly impressive. As the game progressed Ryan Brennan and Patrick Jewitt came into the game and Hazelwood got the first score of the game. However Askeaton were quick to respond with three quick points and the half time score of 1 point to 3 did not look good for Hazelwood College.

Hazelwood came out in the second half full of determination and skill in particular from Kevin Noonan and Ryan Brennan. This surge resulted in Ryan Brennan scoring the only goal of the game. This was quickly followed by 3 points to push Hazelwood into the lead. Askeaton did not give up without a fight but good defending and a series or excellent saves kept Hazelwood in front to the final whistle to continue their unbeaten run.

Hazelwood College Teams at the top of their Game.

This week saw Hazelwood Colleges sports teams at the top of their game as they took to the field in Football, Hurling and Camogie. The Junior Camogie team got their season off to a winning start beating Templemore on a scoreline of 1-2 to 0-2. Hazelwood College, led by captain Joanne O Gorman, were runners-up in last years Munster Championship and were determined to build on last years success. The girls battled a tough opposition and difficult weather conditions to earn a well deserved victory.

Next up was the Junior Ladies Football team who took on Abbeyfeale in a bid to retain last years title. Hazelwood College enjoyed a great win with a score of 6-10 to 4-10. Top scorers on the day were Clodagh Reidy and Joanne O Gorman. A number of first year players had joined the team for the first time and settled well in to the side.

The Boys U14 football team were in action against Askeaton and won 1-8 to 2-3. The defense and goal keeper Conor Buckley worked hard to keep Askeatons score to 0-2 in the first half. In the second half Darren Coleman, Padraig Cunningham and James Barrett put in great performances and allowed Hazelwood to pull ahead and record a good victory.

The final matches of the week saw both First Year Hurling teams meet two teams from Ard Scoil Ris in Limerick. Hazelwood A were unlucky to be beaten by just one point despite great performances from Michael Nolan, Sean Watson, Barry Bresnihan and Kieth Lacey. Hazelwood B had a substantial victory over Ard Scoil Ris B. The final score of 5-3 to 1-2 reflected Hazelwoods dominance from early in the game helped by some exceptional performances by Kevin Noonan, Gary Hanley and Patrick Finn. This was a great week for sport at Hazelwood College, well done to all involved.
