Transition Year student Helena O Shea reports on their recent trip to Poland

Imagine being asked to attend school at midnight! Well that’s exactly what twenty seven sleep-deprived students along with three teachers did in order to depart for our trip to Poland. After a five hour journey by bus and plane we eventually reached Krakow airport on Wednesday March 19th at 11am. We even managed to fit in some exercise on the long walk to the departure gate. Needless to say, once we arrived we were a little tired but it was absolutely worth it.

We were welcomed by our tour guide who accompanied us to our hotel and tried, in vain, to teach us a few Polish phrases. Once we were settled we set off on a walking tour of the city. We visited Churches, Palaces, the University and a Market. At each stop we were given a brief history of the building or place, the people who lived there and its importance to Polish history. After such a busy day we were glad to retreat to our hotel and out of the cold.

The following morning at 6am we woke up to a snow covered city. After breakfast we set off on the hour and a half bus trip Auschwitz. First we went to Auschwitz 1. The camp is now a museum where we saw how prisoners in both that camp and Auschwitz2-Birkenau lived and died. Our guide took us through the barracks of the camp and explained what life would have been like there at the different stages of the camps history.

After lunch we had a tour of Auschwitz 2- Birkenau. We began the tour at the reconstructed wooden huts where the prisoners lived. We had read the novel “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas” in school before we left so we found this tour very interesting. As we continued our tour the snow began to fall again and after just ten minutes everything was snow white.

On the third morning we went to the salt mines near Krakow. Despite the very cold temperatures we had been prepared for underground, we didn’t feel the cold that much; by the end of the tour we had walked up and down over seven hundred steps of stairs. As we walked through the mine we were told stories relating to monuments erected in memory of various famous Poles. One of the highlights of the tour was the beautiful Church at the bottom of the mine. It had been carved from salt by three miners and had taken over sixty years. We also visited a museum where we saw exhibitions of art made from salt and old pieces of equipment used for mining.

That afternoon we were given the chance to spend any money that we might have had left in one of the biggest shopping centres in the city. After dinner that night we braved to cold to go bowling. As soon as we returned to our hotel, the packing frenzy began and the panic about how much heavier our bags were now that we had done our shopping.

At 1pm the next day we landed at Shannon Airport, disappointed that it was over but glad to be home. Everybody really enjoyed themselves and the whole trip was a wonderful experience.

HAZELWOOD COLLEGE THROUGH TO MUNSTER A SEMI FINAL

HAZELWOOD COLLEGE THROUGH TO MUNSTER A SEMI FINAL

Hazelwood College: 3-19
St Brogans, Bandon: 3-10

Hazelwood are through to the Munster semi final after defeating the much fancied St Brogans’s of Bandon in the quarter final played last Wednesday at Rathcool in Dromtariff GAA grounds. Having started badly the previous week Hazewood were determined to get off to a good start and this they did racing into a 1-3 to no score lead. All the scores came through the excellent Jamie Coughlan at corner forward with only one of his points from a placed ball, the goal- a rocket from at least 25 yard out. Hazelwood kept piling on the pressure through points from Ciaran Morrissey and another brilliantly taken goal from Keith Lacey. Brogans meanwhile had kept the scoreboard ticking over largely through frees and dominated for a ten minute patch from the 15th to the 25th minute, leaving it a three point game 2-4 to 7 points. Hazelwood pushed away again through Jamie Coughlan with three points and Jerry Lane with one. Brogans responded with a point but Hazelwood saw out the half in style with an outstanding finish from Ian Carroll, controlling straight off the hurley without taking it into his hand. Hazelwood had a nine point lead at half time 3-8 to 8 points. Hazelwood got off to a rocky start in the second half as Brogans came out fighting scoring 1-1 to bring it to a four point game. Peter Irwin replied with a point only for Brogans to bring it back to four. Our full forward line were combining well and Jamie Coughlan and Keith Lacey both added points to bring the margin out to six. Brogans weren’t finished yet, though scoring a goal after a long ball in to the Hazelwood backline was a close as they were going to get . However the last ten minutes were all Hazelwood with three points from Jerry Lane, a brace from Jamie Coughlan and one each from Ciaran Morrissey and Peter Irwin to leave the final score Hazelwood 3-19, St Brogans 3-10. The semi-final against Killenaule looks set to be fixed for Wednesday 5th or Thursday 6th March.

Hazelwood College 5-10

Borrisokane (Tipperary) 2-17

Hazelwood College are through to the Munster Quarter-final after a dramatic comeback against Borrisokane in Doon last Thursday. Hazelwood struggled in the first half against what was a strong breeze and were lucky to be only down 6 points at half time. The score line at half-time read 2-2 to 1-11, Jamie Coughlan at half forward accounting for all hazelwood’s scores. One of his points was from a placed ball and the other from play. Both goals were outstanding efforts, the sliothar rifled to the net after solo runs from his wing through the centre. Given the breeze, the six point deficit though daunting was still manageable for Hazelwood. The start of the second half was nothing short of a disaster for them, Borrisokane scoring 1-1 without reply to leave Hazelwood 10 points down. Peter Irwin responded with a score from a huge free only for Borrisokane to reply with one of their own, leaving Hazelwood down 10 with 20 minutes remaining and the game seemingly out of sight. It was young Gerry lane who sparked the fight back, first with a point then a well taken goal after combining with Jamie Coughlan. Kieran Morrissey not to out done by his Newtownshandrum club mates, followed suit with an excellent goal. In the space of 5 minutes Hazelwood had reduced the lead from 10 points to just 3, Borrisokane were rattled and this lead to little bit of luck needed when a long ball delivered by the excellent Seamus Sheehan from midfield found its way to the net. The game was now a draw with 15 minutes remaining. Peter Irwin then landed another massive free to put Hazelwood into the lead for the first time. Borrisokane, however were not finished yet and drew level. In the next ten minutes Hazelwood went one up on three separate occasions through peter Irwin and Jamie Coughlan twice only for Borisokane to draw level again. Peter Irwin scored again with 5 minutes remaining to put one point between the teams once again, this time however Hazelwood added a second to put a some daylight between the teams. Kieran Morrissey burnt his man for pace and scored a most important point from 45 yards out. The drama was not over, in the last minute Borrisokane won a 21 yard free. They went for goal but Michael Linehan, who had been outstanding between the posts throughout once again saved and the referee blew the final whistle once the sliothar was cleared from the danger area. Hazelwood are now through to the quarter final against St. Brogan’s of Bandon at 3 0’Clock,wedenesday Feb 27th the venue is yet to be decided.
