Hazelwood Win Historic Football Final

Congratulations to Hazelwood College’s first year football team on winning their first ‘Limerick Colleges’ football final. This was a great performance by the whole panel and is a well deserved reward for their hard work and training during the year. The final was a great spectacle with Hazelwood deciding to play against the wind in the first half. Hazelwood got off to the perfect start with a goal in the opening minutes scored by Dylan Kelly. Dylan kicked in a high dangerous ball which deceived the Doon goalkeeper and landed high into the back of the net. Damien Lacey, who was dangerous throughout, scored a good point from the right wing after good support play by Sean Flanagan and James O’Brien. Doon replied with a point but this was soon cancelled out by a free from Damien Lacey which was rewarded after a Hazelwood player was fouled going through on goal. Play at this stage was very intense with both sides trying to get on top. Michael Barrett, Eamon Shanahan and Lee Daly were towers of strength at this stage for Hazelwood. Halfway through the first-half Cillian Cagney who was having a good solid game at centre back picked up an injury and was replaced by James Donegan who went on to give an exhibition in the backs for Hazelwood. Doon and Hazelwood exchanged points, with Damien Lacey again the scorer. With five minutes remaining Hazelwood broke up a Doon attacking movement in the half-back line. The ball was worked up to the Hazelwood full-forward line through James Donegan, James Butler and Jason Sheahan with the ball eventually being given to Damien Lacey who rounded the Doon goalkeeper to score Hazelwood’s second goal.

Hazelwood continued as they left off in the first half with a point from Damien Lacey after good support play from James O’Brien and Ronan Lehane. James Butler who was causing havoc for the Doon half-back line all day hit a purple patch and scored a point and followed it up with a fine individual goal. At this point Hazelwood were really on top with the full-back line of Peter Mulcahy, Philip O’Flynn and Denis Murray giving away no opportunities to the Doon full-forward line. However, with ten minutes remaining Doon threw everything they had at Hazelwood and scored two good individual goals which would have been more but for the efforts of Shane O’Callaghan in goals. Hazelwood immediately replied with two fine points from Dylan Kelly and Ronan Lehane. Shortly afterwards the ref blew the final whistle to the joy of the Hazelwood panel and their supporters.

Gerry Bennis presented the cup to James O’Brien who in turn thanked the team / supporters / management and gave three cheers to Doon. Hazelwood College now march on to the semi-final of the Limerick VEC first year competition.

Hazelwood College Capture Two Sporting Titles in Two Days!!

It was an extremely busy week at Hazelwood College with both the first year footballers and Junior Camogie team capturing County and Munster titles respectively. The footballers had a great victory over Doon, while the Camogie team quenched Laurel Hill’s hopes of lifting the Junior Camogie Munster Championship Cup with an epic win of 3-6 to 0-2. Next week will continue to huge emphasis on sporting finales as our u/19 basketball team travel to Tallaght to compete in the All Ireland Basket Ball competition on Tuesday, while the u/18 hurlers are facing either Kanturk or Clonakility on Saturday in the Munster Vocational Schools final. Congratulations to both teams were successful in the past week and the very best of luck to our second two teams competing this week.

BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2009

Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher was delighted to have five projects taking part in the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2009. Twelve students travelled from the train station in Charleville to Dublin Heuston on Tuesday, 6th January 2009 with science teacher, Ms. O’ Connor. Excitement and anticipation was high among the students for what was to come during their week at the RDS. The students also got a superb opportunity to make new friends from all over the country and to see what project ideas other people were working on. The judges were very pleasant and the experience of presenting their projects to the judges was a wonderful opportunity to show case their work and efforts. In the evenings the students were treated with a trip to Funderland, the cinema in Dundrum Town Centre and a disco at the RDS. The group returned back to Charleville station with Ms. O’ Connor and Ms. Herbert at eight thirty on Saturday, 10th January 2009, with awards, memories, and fun had by all!!!
Paudie Walsh’s project, ‘BELT UP! – A novel device to check for the wearing of seatbelts at various distances’, received a Highly Commended award at the Young Scientist Exhibition. Everyone at Hazelwood College is very proud of his success.
A Display Award was awarded to the project completed by Transition year students, Lewis Hodgson, Suzie Boyle and Michelle Browne. Their project entered in the Biological and Ecological category aimed ‘To investigate the various effects of pollution on fresh water Salmon and Trout’.
Transition Year students, Niamh O’ Brien and Elizabeth Morley carried out ‘An Investigation into the Affect of Tyrosine Rich Foods on our Dreaming Patterns’. The girls discovered that such foods as raisins, eggs, cheese and soy products can cause increased frequency in the number of dreams experienced by participants.
Transition Year students, Aisling O’ Brien, Michelle Lane and Heather Coffey carried out ‘An investigation into the minority numbers taking Science subjects at Leaving Certificate’. With ever increasing interest in the development of ‘knowledge economies’ and home grown scientific experts, this project investigated a topical educational issue, the results of which may have a long-term impact in the success of Ireland as a centre for scientific excellence.
First year students, Bridann Cronin, Clare Fehin and Shane O’ Callaghan carried out ‘A Qualitative Study on the use of Natural Horsemanship and Traditional Training Practices’. The students carried out extensive research into the training practices used by horse trainers in the mid-west region. The focus for horse trainers was on good horsemanship rather than defining if the practices being used can be classified as natural or traditional training practices.
The students are thankful to their science teachers Ms. O’ Connor, Ms. Herbert, Mr. McCarthy and Mrs. Treacy, who offered guidance and support during the preparations for the exhibition.

The All-Ireland Schools Cup will once again be covered on Setanta Television from Monday, February 23 – Thursday, February 26.

The programme will be aired each day during this period at 4pm.

Hazelwood Students Launch New Website

The AIB student bank in the school has launched it’s own new website – Be With Us Today .Com

This website has been designed, created and developed entirely by the students in the bank.

All content is created and maintained by the students. It provides content of interest to account holders,such as banking hours, how to access accounts and money etc. It also provides a selection of games, screensavers, puzzles etc. in the a Student Lounge area. The website also contains a downloadable toolbar which provides easy access to search engines such as google via your internet browser.

Hazelwood College’s Path to Munster Hurling final

Hazelwood College Senior Hurling team are due to play the Munster Vocational Schools Hurling Final next Saturday the 31st of January, unfortunately neither the date nor venue for the final was confirmed by the time of writing as the semi-final between Clonakilty and Kanturk has not yet been played. The senior hurlers began training in earnest last September and began the year in style with a fine win over Harty competitors Doon CBS in the limerick Schools Quarter finals in Doon. First up in the Munster competition was to be Newport of Tipperay, unfortunately a walkover was given and Hazelwood proceeded to the next round without being tested. In the second round tie on October 9th, Cahir were the opposition in Galbally. It was a tight affair for the first twenty minutes but Hazelwood College gradually began to dominate running out 2-10 to 1-4 winners. Next up were Killenaule of Tipperary a game played in Lattin, again Hazelwood College struggled before eventually dominating and running out easy winners on a score of 4-12 to 1-3. For our next game we returned to the Limerick schools scene to play St. John The Baptist, Hospital this performance in Newtownshandrum was the low point of our season and we were deservedly beaten. This game did serve the purpose of putting us in the right frame of mind and our Semi-final performance versus Carrick-On-Suir in early December was probably our best performance yet, a game which we dominated from start to finish winning by a score of 4-25 to 0-3. The final is fixed for next Saturday, feel free to contact the school to inquire of venue and time where hopefully the senior hurlers can take one more step and claim the Munster Hurling crown

A New Visitor – Snow

Today the snow visited Hazelwood College like the rest of the country. Well done to all the staff and students who bared the road and weather conditions to get to school today.

CLONASLEE EDGE FINAL CLASH

Clonaslee Vocational School had to pull out all the stops in the final quarter to capture the U19 C Girls All Ireland Schools title after a remarkable third quarter by their opponents Limerick’s Hazelwood College looked like spoiling the party for the Laois girls.

With the score at 36-32 and 4.11 left on the clock the game could have gone either way but Clonaslee’s captain Angelina Rigney stepped up to the free throw line before calmly slotting home four frees to finally kill off the game.

The Laois side’s Ciara O’Donavan was awarded the MVP, topped scored with 13 and alongside Nicole Kelly, Rigney and Conroy where instrumental in their side’s All Ireland success.

The winners settled quickest in the game with Rigney leading from the front with two excellently executed baskets before a lay up from Siobhan Conroy gave the Laois School an early 6-0 advantage.

Hazelwood finally put points on the board with a little over two minutes left in the quarter through a lay up from Marie Flanagan while a superb three point play and lay up from Aoife Leahy got the Limerick team right back in the game.

Clonaslee took a 8-7 lead into the second quarter and slowly built up a nine point lead with great offensive play led by O’Donavan and Kelly as they cut through Hazelwood’s defence with ease.

So with a combined scoring of 13 points between the duo the Laois school headed in at the break with a commanding 28-12 lead. However the third period of play was all about one team, Hazelwood, who finally got to grips with the game outscoring their opponents by 16-8.

At the forefront of their comeback was Flanagan who registered nine points from open play and off the free throw line, while baskets from Meaney, Celia Cremin and Leahy handed them the initiative despite trailing by 34-28 going into the final quarter.

Hazelwood kept up the pressure by adding to their score courtesy of inside baskets from Emma Purcell and Celia Cremin but it was coolness personified when Rigney stepped up when they pressure was on that proved the difference.
