Actors, each portraying seriously injured traffic collision victims, were treated by emergency services during the demonstration.

Emergency personnel also informed participants of their own first hand experiences at the scenes of accidents and also the follow on effects and how it changes people’s lives forever.

Hazelwood Lose Limerick “A” Schools Semi-Final After Extra Time

Hazelwood college, Dromcollogher 2-12
St. John the Baptist, Hospital 4-12

This replay was played in a gale force wind conditions and though it was a draw at half time and again at full-time, hospital’s determination against the wind in extra time was determining factor in this game. Hospital playing with the wind opened the scoring with two fine points, from midfield. A slightly fortunate goal by Jerry lane put Hazelwood into a short lived lead, Hospital responded with a brace of points from placed balls. Despite playing into the strong breeze, Hazelwood were mustering some attacks and Jerry Lane scored another point to level the game. Hospital responded with a goal and a point to put them four points up with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Hazelwood College continued to plug and managed a point from a Jerry lane free followed by an excellently finished Shane Carroll goal to level matters up. Each side managed another point before half time, to leave Hazelwood seemingly in the stronger position at the start of the second half.

Hospital signalled their intentions opening the score with a fine point with the opening minute of the second half. Hazelwood then began a period of dominance which would see them score six unanswered points through Barry Lynch, Michael Fitzgibbon and for Jerry Lane frees. With six minutes remaining, however Hazelwood had not finished off the game and a goal by Hospital meant the game was again in doubt. A Jamie Coughlan point but Hazelwood three up but this was followed by another Hospital goal with two minutes remaining to level the game. The full time score was Hazelwood 2-10, Hospital 3-7. Hospital were much stronger in extra-time and though Hazelwood were playing with the wind in the first period of extra time they were outscore by 1-1 to 2 points and once Hospital turned around the drove home this advantage with four unanswered points to leave two goals between the teams at the finish. Next up for Hazelwood is Causeway in The Munster Vocational Championship in Newcastlewest, on Friday November 28th. Hazelwood College (Dromcollogher) 0-14
St. John The Baptist (Hospital) 3-05

Both teams left Dromcollogher regretting chances missed but relieved to have another opportunity of qualifying for the Limerick Schools Senior “A” hurling final. The game looked to have slipped away from Hazelwood but two injury time points from Jerry Lane were enough to earn them another chance in a game that has been fixed for Hospital at 12:30 on Wednesday, November 17th.
Hazelwood had started the brighter of the two teams and scored five points without reply in the opening fifteen minutes. Jerry Lane and Kevin Quaid scored two each, while Shane Carroll popped over the other. This period of Hazelwood dominance was shattered in a two minute spell, where Hospital scored 1-1, so despite having the majority of play in the first 17 minutes Hazelwood only lead by one point. It was now Hospital’s time to dominate, which they did until half-time adding a second goal. Hazelwood managed only one more point before half-time through Jerry lane. So at half time the score-line read 0-6 to 2-1 in favour of Hospital.
The second half was a real ding-dong affair. Michael Fitzgibbon, now operating at full-forward, opened Hazelwood’s account in the second half bringing the game level again. Hospital immediately replied before Jerry lane pointed a free to bring the sides level once more. Hospital once again replied through a free to keep their noses in front. Hazelwood scored three points in three minutes through Damian Lacey, Kevin Quaid and Jerry lane who struck a penalty over the bar to push themselves into a two point lead with ten minutes remaining. It was then that Hospital struck for their 3rd goal putting them back into a one point lead. The game was far from over yet. Daniel Collins, on as a sub, scored a levelling point with five minutes to go. The momentum then swung back to hospital with two points, this meant that Hazelwood were now two points down heading into injury time. Jerry lane added another two to his total and Hazelwood breathed a sigh of relief. Both teams will hope to improve dramatically as the winners face Ard Scoil Ris in the final.

Highest National Number of 2010 Young Scientest Entries

Students at Hazelwood College were both thrilled and relieved when they received the news that their project had qualified to compete in the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition this year. Five projects will represent the school in the RDS, Dublin from the 12th – 15th January 2011. Over 1735 projects were submitted throughout the country so for Hazelwood College to have five projects is a huge achievement. Again this year Hazelwood College have the highest number of projects in the county.

Marion Brosnan, Kathyrn McCarthy and Triona Dunleavy’s project entitled “An Investigation into the Effect Cider Vinegar has on the Somatic Cell count of Cow’s milk”, is an extremely topical subject, in which a lot of local farmers will be interested to find out more about in order to reduce the number of cases of mastitis that occur.
Liz Cremin and Ciara O Shea have booked a place in the Intermediate Technology Section, their project – “An assessment of grass / fresh silage as a good feedstock for anaerobic digestion and produce a novel device in order to remove the biogas and digestate”. Another interesting and original idea for the agricultural world.

Kallie Hodgson, Becky Ryan and Eddie Prunty have undertaken “An exploratory investigation into the beneficial effects of Coursework B and does it influence students opting to pursue a Leaving Certificate Science subject”. Fascinating facts and opinions are currently been uncovered in the analysis of questionnaires.

The fourth project from transition year students involves Loretta Hanley and Aisling O Connor. They are in the process of “Designing a Heat Recovery System for a domestic chimney flute”. This innovative device will alleviate and cut down on costs for heating homes which will be very much welcomed in our current climate!

Katie Cunningham and Tara Barrett, both second year students at Hazelwood College. Their project, ‘The Changing Face of Menstruation’ aims to investigate the subtle changes in the female face which take place during the course of her menstrual cycle and to find out the stage during her menstrual cycle when she is most attractive. This investigation is arousing much interest and enthusiasm amongst teachers and students alike!

A buzz of excitement is around all the participants as they look forward to displaying their work for all to see! A lot of hard work is necessary is any of the projects wish to follow last year’s success where Máire Flanagan and Celia Cremin were placed First in the Intermediate Technology Section.

Well done and Best of luck to all involved!
