Munster Vocational Schools Semi Final

Unlucky Hazelwood bow out at semi-final stage of the Munster Vocational Schools Championship

Causeway CS (Kerry) 4-7
Hazelwood College (Limerick) 1-11

Causeway opened the scoring in this Munster Semi- final, played in Tournafulla with a fine score from their corner forward. Hazelwood responded well with three unanswered scores with 1-1 from David O Donell and a well taken free from Jerry Lane. Causeway and Hazelwood each scored points before Causeway enjoyed a purple-patch with 2 points and a goal without reply leaving the score at 1-4 to 1-3 in favour of Causeway. Cian Mulcahy then got a fine score from the right wing after a strong solo-run to tie the game twenty minutes into the first half. Causeway finished the half the stronger side as Hazelwood tired playing into a strong breeze with 1-1 without reply to leave the score at the interval to 2-5 to 1-4. Causeway and Hazelwood traded scores for the opening 15 minutes of the second half, Hazelwood scoring 2 points and causeway landing 1-2 to leave the scores at 3 -7 to 1 -7. Now six points down Hazelwood threw everything into attack scoring three unanswered points two coming from jerry lane and the other from Eric o Connor. With three minutes to go, however, Hazelwood got caught out at the back and conceded a goal which effectively killed the game, though they did score one more point before the final whistle. The Kerry side now progress into the Munster final, where they face Nenagh who emerged through the back door after suffering defeat to Hazelwood in the opening round. Hazelwood will play Kilmallock on Friday next in the Limerick “B” schools final, no venue was confirmed at the time of writing.

Third Year Trip to the Dàil is Great Success

Hazelwood College Third Year Trip to the Dàil is a Great Success.

Third year students from Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher visited the Dàil on Friday January 13 as part of their Junior Certificate studies of Irish politics.
Thirty Nine students and 2 teachers, Mr Mathew Finn and Mr Donal McCormack, left the school at 7.15 am and arrived at Dublin at 10.45. Once they got off the bus they were escorted into the Dàil. Upon entering they saw extremely impressive pictures of Pro and Anti Treaty Leaders where their guide told them a few details about the pictures and the actual building itself. They then made their way to witness the energetic discussions between the Fine Gael party and the opposition about whether to put impose taxes on people who have septic tanks on their property. This was an excellent discussion and was enjoyed by all students. The atmosphere was electric!

The students then moved on and saw a brilliant painting of Countess Markievicz, the first lady to be elected to Westminster, however she did not take the seat.
Next was a visit to the Seanad. Here the students were very impressed with the amazing artwork and learned it was originally intended to be a gallery for the Fitzgerald family. Everyone was surprised to discover that the Seanad was much more beautifully decorated than the Dàil. Afterwards they took a tour of the building and were delighted to receive Coke in the prestigious Dàil bar, compliments of TD Patrick O’ Donovan. Patrick O’ Donavan’s then gave an interesting presentation in the media room on how the Dàil functions. He also explained his proposal to introduce P.E to the Leaving Cert curriculum, something which everyone thought was a brilliant idea. Afterwards all the students went to the National Museum and saw the spectacular artefacts from various cultures.
The whole day was an all-round success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Recent Art Exhibition

Hazelwood College recently held its first ever Arts Exhibition in the Community Hall in Dromcollogher. The event was an incredible success. There was barely standing room as crowds packed the Hall to see the Art and Literary talent on display. Students proudly displayed their work to parents and members of the local community. Awards were given out on the night to prize winners from local primary schools and those who had made a big contribution to Art in Hazelwood College. All proceeds on the night were given to Dromcollogher Day Care Center. Huge congratulations are due to Ms Corkery and Mr O Connor who organised the event.

Pictured below are some of the pictures taken on the night.
