Hazelwood kicked off their season against Salesian College in Broadford last Wednesday. They produced a very impressive performance for a team playing together for the first time. From the beginning, the home team settled into the game creating the better of the chances. Matthew Lynch and Charlie O’Mahony went close before Darragh O’Sullivan open the scoring midway through the half. The defence looked well organised with Adam Curtin and Patrick O’Donnell dominating the central positions. Ronan White was busy down the right hand side, giving very little chances away. Bobby Gore and Colin Burke were causing the opposition all sorts of trouble in the first half with their clever movement and accurate passing. Charlie and Bobby were combining very well on the left hand side especially. Hazelwood College were well worth their 1-0 half time lead.

Rua Daly and Ollie Stokes were introduced at half time and both had a very positive impact on the second half performance. Ollie was on the scoreboard early in the second half with a strike from outside the box. The midfield trio of Alan Cussen, Jack Sheehy and Colin Burke were having to work really hard to keep an improving Pallaskenry team at bay. The away team scored a deserved goal to make the score 2-1. Then Hazelwood really showed what they were made of and pushed on for the win in devastating fashion. Ollie Stokes stuck first from 35 yards out on the left wing. Cathal Geary was heavily involved in the build up. The final goal of the game came from close range by Colin Burke. It was a well deserved goal following a typical power-packed display from Colin. Fintan Maloney and Rhys Mulcahy made valuable contributions when called upon after coming on in the final quarter. Despite not having many saves to make, Mikey O’Connor had a very impressive debut. He directed operations in front of him very effectively, showing leadership skills you might expect from a senior student.
