Hazelwood College were back at the RDS for this year’s BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition and were very well represented by two groups of students, with one of the groups scooping a highly valued category award. Second years Conor Heenan and Iain Kelly from Kilmeedy and Stephen Long from Feenagh were the team that clinched third prize at the glittering awards ceremony in the Intermediate Group category of the Technology section this year. Mentored, encouraged, and accompanied by their teacher Martina Matthews, the lads presented their project “No keys, no problem! An innovative key finder to aid individuals locate missing keys”. This project touches on the area of smart devices and the internet of things, and in this case the Hazelwood boys used direct radio communication between a locator device and an active fob attached to a key-ring. This innovative use of technology to address and solve a common issue caught the imagination of many that passed their very attractively presented stand, including the Six-One News team. The articulate way that the lads performed on TV carried on all during the exhibition and as well as contributing to their success it also accounts for their huge popularity among the other schools from all over Ireland.

In the Intermediate Group category of the Social & Behavioural Sciences section Ellen Reidy and Aine O’Sullivan presented a project called “Subtle Manipulation: An investigation into people’s awareness if the discreet enhancement techniques used by advertisers”. The project sought to determine if people are aware of the subtle influences of advertising by investigating the impact of alterations made to advertisements. In conjunction with teacher Matthew Finn, the girls had a very well presented stand with graphs, charts, imagery and artefacts relating to the manipulation of advertising by marketing groups. Fully on top of their subject and obviously well prepared, Ellen and Aine also showed themselves to be excellent communicators, well able to engage with visitors and judges at their stand. In this particularly large section of the competition, Ellen and Aine must have come very close to a rosette. Both teams clearly enjoyed the whole experience and certainly did themselves, their families and their school very proud indeed.
