Hazelwood Athletics Hot Shots
On what turned out to be a gorgeous sunny day in CIT, four Hazelwood College athletes (Kevin O Leary, Laoise Bennis, Mairead Lordon and Maria Cremin) competed in the Munster Schools Combined Events Competition. Among the very stiff competition, the Hazelwood College athletes competed fantastically. Combined Events Competition involves the athletes competing in five disciplines over one day, being allocated points on how the preform in each event. Hazelwood College’s athletic team gave great individual performances over the course of the day, but were unlucky, in narrowly missing out on medals.
All four athletes had fantastic races in their hurdles races, finishing no lower than third in each race. This high Hazelwood standard was maintained when Mairead, Kevin and Laoise all achieved personal bests in the long jump. Laoise raised the standard further when she went on to win her high jump, with a personal best equalling jump of 1.45m, narrowly missing out on 1.50m. Kevin also had an impressive high jump, smashing his personal best to jump 1.35m to finish second. Maria struggled with her mark in her strongest event, the long jump, but still managed 3.76m. She also equalled her personal best in the high jump and ran a new personal best in her 800m. Mairead was very pleased with her solid run in the hurdles and saved her best performance for the last event of the day the 800m getting a new personal best of 2min 47sec, showing great promise for the cross country season.
All in all it was a fantastic day with lots of personal bests, but more importantly it shows great promise for the future.
