Hazelwood Lose Limerick “A” Schools Semi-Final After Extra Time

This replay was played in a gale force wind conditions and though it was a draw at half time and again at full-time, hospital’s determination against the wind in extra time was determining factor in this game. Hospital playing with the wind opened the scoring with two fine points, from midfield. A slightly fortunate goal by Jerry lane put Hazelwood into a short lived lead, Hospital responded with a brace of points from placed balls. Despite playing into the strong breeze, Hazelwood were mustering some attacks and Jerry Lane scored another point to level the game. Hospital responded with a goal and a point to put them four points up with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Hazelwood College continued to plug and managed a point from a Jerry lane free followed by an excellently finished Shane Carroll goal to level matters up. Each side managed another point before half time, to leave Hazelwood seemingly in the stronger position at the start of the second half.
Hospital signalled their intentions opening the score with a fine point with the opening minute of the second half. Hazelwood then began a period of dominance which would see them score six unanswered points through Barry Lynch, Michael Fitzgibbon and for Jerry Lane frees. With six minutes remaining, however Hazelwood had not finished off the game and a goal by Hospital meant the game was again in doubt. A Jamie Coughlan point but Hazelwood three up but this was followed by another Hospital goal with two minutes remaining to level the game. The full time score was Hazelwood 2-10, Hospital 3-7. Hospital were much stronger in extra-time and though Hazelwood were playing with the wind in the first period of extra time they were outscore by 1-1 to 2 points and once Hospital turned around the drove home this advantage with four unanswered points to leave two goals between the teams at the finish. Next up for Hazelwood is Causeway in The Munster Vocational Championship in Newcastlewest, on Friday November 28th. A much improved performance will be needed if Hazelwood are dethrone the current All-Ireland champions and reach theit third Munster Final in a row at this age group.
